PAST NEWS AND INFORMATION:

Outreach Haiti Update: June 2020

Last Sunday we received an update on the efforts of Outreach Haiti to support the community and school in Petit Harpon.  Former St. Peter’s parishioner Jon Dutton reports from Tennessee that difficulties encountered with wiring payments to Pere Banna have been resolved, and the container of supplies shipped several months ago, in anticipation of a mission trip canceled due to political unrest, is secure and waiting at the offices of Help for Haiti in Port Au Prince for the next mission trip. While school was discontinued on the mountain earlier this spring due to COVID-19, the hope was to return in June to complete the month or so of classes needed to finish the academic year.  Following his report of the news summarized here, Jon offered these thoughts:

“The last few days/months have certainly been unsettling.   On this Pentecost Sunday, I am especially reminded during this time that God’s Kingdom is here and now, even though it certainly doesn’t feel like it when we watch the news or see the pain in our neighbors eyes.  God’s Kingdom transcends community, state, politics, and nation.  Many of us have experienced the Kingdom first hand on the mountain top in Petit Harpon.  Whether it’s a church service, a community feast, or after a long hard day’s work enjoying a Prestige on the steps of the school watching the sun go down.  There is something about that community that makes me feel the presence of Christ like no where else.  It reminds me that we are all God’s children loved by Him and charged to love each other.  I pray we experience the presence in our own communities.

For our friends in Haiti, it may feel like there is not a lot we can do right now.  However, we stay committed to the community.  We will continue to fund the school and continue to pray for the health and well being of every soul on that mountain.  Through many years, we’ve partnered together to build a strong foundation.  We’ve seen hurricanes, earthquakes, financial crisis’ and now this.  I have no doubt we will be back, we will hug our friends and break bread together.  In the meantime, let’s continue to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with our God.

Gods Peace,
Jon
