Black History Month: Bishop Deon K. Johnson

The Rt. Rev. Deon Kevin Johnson is the eleventh Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Missouri.  A native of Barbados, Johnson emigrated to the United States when he was 14 years old. He studied at Case Western Reserve University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English and History in 2000. He also graduated with a Master of Divinity from the General Theological Seminary in 2003.  In the profile he wrote prior to the election, Johnson said he was born in Barbados, and emigrated to New York at the age of 14 with his older brother — leaving their mother and grandmother behind. After graduating from General Theological Seminary, he served as associate rector at a church in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and for the past 13 years as rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Brighton, Michigan, about 40 miles west of Detroit. He described the church as having “a long history of social activism particularly around the inclusion of LGBTQ+ persons, tackling food insecurity, and youth and young adult engagement.”

Bishop Johnson was ordained deacon on June 15, 2003, and priest on December 19, 2003. After ordination, he served as associate rector at Christ Church in Shaker Heights, Ohio, until 2006, when he became rector at St Paul's Church in Brighton, Michigan.  On November 23, 2019, Johnson was elected Bishop of Missouri at Diocesan Convention on the first ballot receiving a majority of the clergy and lay votes in the election.

Bishop Johnson was consecrated and installed on June 13, 2020  succeeding George Wayne Smith as Bishop of Missouri. His offices are located on the third floor in the Bishop Tuttle Building at Christ Church Cathedral. “I am overwhelmed with joy, humility, and gratitude,” Johnson said to the convention from his home in Michigan. “The Holy Spirit has brought us to this day, for such a time as this. I am looking forward to walking with you as we share the liberating love of Jesus. My husband and our family are looking forward to being with you in the new year.”
