Video: What is Evensong?

The Living Tradition conversation series began on Sunday, September 27, 2020 with "What is Evensong?"

Please Note: We apologize for our technical error which prevented many users from joining the Zoom call. Future conversations on Zoom will require a passcode that we will provide in advance.

And a necessary correction: the recording of the Tallis Responses that we listened to are from a modern edition that conforms to the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. It is likely that at the time it was composed, Tallis's music would have conformed to the 1549 or 1552 Prayer Book. More information and a more historic edition of the sheet music here: Choral Responses from (Ancient Groove Music).

The issues around the development of these Preces and Responses for Evensong are complex, and the fluidity with which this music is treated shows that Evensong is indeed a living tradition. We will discuss Preces and Responses in depth in our next Living Tradition conversation on Sunday, October 11 at 1:30 p.m. Central time. You are warmly invited to take part.
