The Twenty-Second Sunday after Pentecost

The anthem at the Offertory, “I know that my Redeemer lives” by Sasha Johnson Manning (b. 1963), was commissioned by Sarah Bryan Miller in memory of her mother, Eleanor C. “Dolly” Miller. Bryan was a parishioner and devoted member of the St. Peter’s Choir who sang until her death in 2020. For many years, she was also the classical music critic of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Her love of music, pursuit of excellence, and deep Christian faith inspired all who knew her.

Continuing our exploration of the music of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (c. 1525–1594) in the 500th year since his birth, the Choir sing the Sanctus and Agnus Dei from his Missa Papae Marcelli, his best-known mass setting. This six-voice mass, composed in honor of Pope Marcellus II, employs more florid contrapuntal writing in the Sanctus than it does in the Gloria (sung last Sunday). The final section of the Agnus Dei expands the choral texture to seven voices while including a three-voice canon.
